Rock 50 Preview
H! Everyone.
Our radio show this month will air on February 23rd. I hope you will join us. We'll be playing new releases in Hardcore Metal and some of the favorites from last year. I haven't played any Pantera for a while, so I'm playing something this month. Disfear, I'm sure, will be back on the show from January, and right now, Korn kick off the top of the show.
We'll make a brief tribute to Buddy, Ritchie and the Big Popper. It's been 49 years since their fatal plane crash after playing the Surf Ballroom gig in Clear Lake, Iowa, February 3, 1959.
OK. We'll be there February 23rd.
Stay safe. Stay strong.

Oct 27 Rock 50 Preview
H! Everybody,
Our Halloween show this year is two hours of extremely extraordinary bands. Here are some of the bands we'll be playing: Mnemic, Type O Negative, Rob Zombie, Murder Dolls, Dimmu Borgir, Job For A Cowboy, Korn, Arch Enemy, The Used and The Black Dahlia Murder.
Stay strong.
Peace,
Bill Ward
PS. The Halloween show is our last 100% Hardcore show of '07. The Armistice show on November 10th and the Christmas show on December 8th, both contain incredible music, but not necessarily all Metal or Hardcore. Given the solemnness of November 11, you can be sure there will be classic songs in keeping with remembering the dead and fallen. The Christmas show will reflect the passion of the season, and I'm not talking about Christmas trees, presents or killing turkeys. Our Christmas shows try to reflect and focus on those without and the hardships at Christmas. Our show will try to bring some solace to those suffering.

January 20th Radio Show Preview
H! Everybody. It's Bill.
Just checking in with you to announce some details of the radio show (New Year show) for this Saturday, January 20th.
I don't know yet, if I'll be at the show, however, Mike Stark and Liese will be there to make sure you get the best of today's metal hardcore music and more. We're featuring some new cuts, including new Deftones. We'll be continuing to play recently new Strapping Young Lad and Lamb of God cuts also - both great albums.
The biggest feature will be an entire segment devoted to Type O Negative. They're here in Southern California and playing live at the House of Blues in Anaheim, CA on January 21st and 22nd. I've selected the most played Type O music on our radio show from over the years. I hope you'll enjoy what I've chosen.
We'll also step out of our normal format to play a James Brown song and send our condolences to his family.
OK - I have to leave. Check us out. It's a good show if you enjoy kick ass metal.

Bill previews Dec 16th Rock 50 Show
Hi Everyone.
Our radio show is this coming Saturday, December 16th. My trip to the U.K., for the most part was very enjoyable. I particularly liked the cold rain, gales, and below freezing temps. Upon my arrival back in the States, my gusto, energy and determination to get back on track soared then fizzled. I am, as I write this, floundering in the mire, hating the Christmas show I put together and searching for a new show - brought to my knees by the California sunshine, winds and allergies. Between body aches, I argue in my mind - Slipknot here or Dylan? - such dilemmas I can afford every day.
Bottom line, whatever the show will be musically, it will be a show dedicated to all - rich or poor, with or without, for those in love, for those suffering, for all people everywhere. Expect some Slipknot, Type O, Lennon, Flaming Lips, U2, older songs and classics - I guess, a mixed bag of artists, every one of them great in what they do.
Check us out. It'll be a surprise for me and hopefully for you.
Stay Strong,
Bill

Bill speaks on November Rock 50 Show
Hi! Everybody. It's Bill.
The hardcore show for November falls on 11/11, Armistice Day/Veterans Day this year. The host of Rock 50, Mike Stark will be running this show. I'll be back in December for the Christmas Show, December 16th.
The 11/11 show will be a Best of Hardcore '06 and some '05. All the Greatest of the Great: Slipknot, In Flames, Lamb of God, Dimmu, Strapping Young Lad, Shadows Fall, Arch Enemy, The Haunted, Exodus, Ministry. It's endless, and it'll rock from top to bottom. However, one exception; there will be a tribute to those in harm's way, a reminder of those lost but not forgotten, in fitting with 11/11. Tracks in the tribute so far, Gung Ho/Anthrax and Recruit/Waterdown; possibly Pavarotti, I don't know yet.
Hey, Stay Strong. "And if it's in the dark, put it in the light." © Bill Ward.

H! Everyone.
It's Bill. October 28th is our Hardcore show. This month, I've thrown in a few Halloween surprises. We have some new releases, or relatively new. Strapping Young Lad, good stuff. Sikth, a new band - to me, they sound great. More Lamb of God from their Sacrament album; Arch Enemy; In Flames; new to me, Psychocharger; Zombie1s Death of it All - just right for Halloween; the Murder Dolls - mmm, I wonder what they1ll be playing; Exodus; new Mastodon - great album: Type O Negative - one of my favorite bands, quite brilliant, I think. The show, I hope, will get you moving. There are many more bands, and I hope you1ll like it.

CLASSIC ROCK AND METAL (AND THE BLUES)
H! Everybody.
Just a reminder that on 10/14/06 "ROCK 50" at 11:00 AM Pacific goes on the air and over the internet (for details, check out the Rock 50 Radio page.)
The Classic Rock/Metal show is usually a wider variation of music, if compared to our Hardcore show. It's a combination of music starting from the 60's, sometimes earlier, right up to the late 80's, and sometimes beyond that decade. We try to make a good show, playing the heavy-hitting bands - AC/DC, Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Priest, Sabbath - all of whom appear 10/14, as well as the Rock bands of the 60's - Cream, Yardbirds, The Who. Also on this show, we'll shake it up a little and play some old and new Blues to pay homage to those who've made a path for many of us to walk down.
Later.
Stay Strong,
Bill

Bill previews Aug 12th Rock 50 Episode
OK, we have a lot of stuff going on for our August 12th radio show. We're playing some of the bands from the "Sounds of The Underground" tour, playing here on August 12th in Southern California at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City. Cannibal Corpse, Gwar, Through The Eyes of the Dead, Trivium, and of course, In Flames will be featured.
The "Gigantour" kicks off September 6th at the Idaho Center in Nampa, ID, so we're playing bands from that upcoming tour also. Megadeth, Lamb of God, Arch Enemy, Overkill and more. All the bands mentioned so far from both tours are balls out, extreme rock - very incredible.
Other bands on the radio show will be Scar Symmetry, Stone Sour, A Life Once Lost and Unearth. Check us out if your taste is Metal and radical Hardcore.
Also, a short memorial tribute to the legendary Arthur Lee of Love fame will be played after the first hour of the show. Arthur died in Memphis on Thursday, August 3, 2006.

Bill Ward on July 22nd Rock 50 Show
H! Everybody. It's Bill.
I wanted to check in to make an announcement about a change in the upcoming Hardcore show's format. As some of you know, Syd Barrett, one of the founding musicians of Pink Floyd, died recently. Towards the last 30 minutes of the show, we'll be playing some of Syd's most memorable songs, and possibly "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" by Pink Floyd.
Regular listeners to Rock 50's Hardcore show know that we pretty much pound away two hours of very, very heavy metal tracks, however, Syd's death has to be acknowledged, and a tribute to him is essential.
Other bands appearing on the show this month - new Shadows Fall, Devil Driver, As Hope Dies, Celtic Frost, Ice Pick and many more.
Check out the show if you can this Saturday, July 22nd at 11:00 AM Pacific Time.
Rock always,
Bill

This Saturday’s Rock 50 Show To Feature The Pioneers of Rock and Heavy Metal
Saturday’s Rock 50 show marks a return to the Classics with the first special edition of Bill’s Rock 50 show. During the first hour, Bill will showcase songs by artists who were influential to him personally, and who, in his opinion, also set the course for this new direction in Rock. This set will include ground-breaking tracks such as "Shapes of Things" by The Yardbirds, The Doors’ “Break on Through,” Cream’s "White Room," The Pretty Things’ "Defecting Grey" and "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane - songs that broadened the spectrum of Rock with dark, eerie sounds and rough edges. Also listen for key tracks by The Who, Led Zeppelin, and of course, Black Sabbath. In Part 2 of the show, Bill expands on the groundwork laid down in the 60’s with a hard-hitting line-up of artists, including Rainbow, Deep Purple, AC/DC, Iron Maiden and Motorhead.
You asked for it, and now the Classics are back. Tune in Saturday and remember to keep checking the Rock 50 page for the next Classic Metal edition.

Bill to Expand his Rock 50 Show
Beginning in April, Bill will co-host two "Rock 50" shows every four months. The additional show will focus on classic metal and hard rock artists, with the first program airing on Saturday, April 29th. Bill's regular show featuring his favorite hard-core bands will continue to run each month - check the Rock 50 page for upcoming dates.
Bill has passed along a letter about the additional shows for you..
Hi Everyone!
I'm very happy that Mike Stark, our host for the "Rock 50" show, has been able to give me the opportunity to present three classic rock shows per year, along with our hard-core shows. The hard-core shows have been going really well, and I am fully enjoying researching newer bands, as well as playing the established giants of metal today. I've been able to build a lot of new relationships with many of the bands we play, and I'll continue to look forward to meeting and playing the music of the bands to come. As much as I love the newer music, I have been missing playing hard rock and classic metal, and over the past year I've phased out mixing new metal with classic metal.
I felt both combinations somehow choked, or diminished the energy during a two-hour period. I feel much more focused when playing hard-core only, and vice versa when playing a total classic rock, metal show. I think by playing separate shows there will be less push and pull, and I think the end product of the shows will be stronger and more definitive.
As I do with the hard-core bands, I want to do more "classic metal" interviews (something I've wanted to do for awhile). I like the interviews to be direct from the guts, so I hope for good in-depth interviews.
I guess our first classic metal show is April 29th - check us out. For those of you out there that don1t like the new stuff, but love the older bands, then definitely check out this show, we1ll rock from start to finish.
Finally, calling all hard-core fans, check out the show March 22nd - Dimmu Borgir, the re-released "Stormblast" CD - need I say more.

Bill Speaks out on Rock 50
H! everybody,
It's Bill. I wanted to check in with some info about the February 11th radio show. In January, we played excerpts from the new In Flames CD, street date U.S.A. 2/7/06. On the February show, we're continuing with the In Flames interview and will be playing full-length tracks off their new CD.
I also played Vermin last month, and as of today, 2/1/06, I may play another Vermin track on the next show. Again, we have great bands for the February line-up: Soilwork, Fear My Thoughts, In Flames, Darkest Hour, Detonation, Water Down, Deftones, Chimaria and Fear Factory. Check the show out if you can. It's mostly hardcore, in your face metal. Sometimes, I play classic metal, and I'll throw in a few curves for the ride like Dylan or Pavarotti.
Got go to.
Stay strong. Stay strange.

Bill comments on his Rock 50 Radio show
H! Everybody!
Bill Ward here.
I wanted to drop in a brief message about what's in store for our November 19th and December 10th radio shows.
First, I'm still celebrating/acknowledging that it's Sabbath's 35th Anniversary in the U.S., so there will be Sabbath music and some pre-recorded well-wishes. There are two interviews in the November show, Shadows Fall - great band - Jason & Jon talking backstage, and also, recently I interviewed Matt McDonough of Mudvayne, particularly about their last CD "Lost and Found" (check out the October show Mudvayne track "Pushing Through," incredible song). Matt' s interview is great. So if you can, check out these guys, Matt McDonough of Mudvayne and Jason Bittner and Jon Donais of Shadows Fall. All most talented musicians.
On the November show, I finally get to catch up since coming off tour with the Sabs and play some more GZR as promised back in the early summer. If you' ve not heard this CD or GZR period, then go buy their CD. The album's superb. Try not to miss them on our November 19th radio show.
Other tracks being played in November: Soilwork, Fear Factory, Foo Fighters of course, Darkest Hour, possibly Soulfly (an incredible album) and surprise tracks. Surprise tracks are tracks I've not chosen yet, so it'll be a surprise for you and me, hopefully. In any event, if you like hard rock and metal with some Pavarotti, blues and jazz thrown in from time to time, then check us out.
Our December show is kind of like my "Best of" show I do in one of the summer months, except I play what I think is cool for Christmas. Rather than playing Bing's "White Christmas," our mascot song pretty much is Type O Negative' s "Red Water (Christmas Mourning)" which upon first hearing, I fell in love with, and I've been playing it ever since. There's a brief interview with Johnny Kelly (drummer, Type O) who sets up the "Red Water" track. Again, there are pre-recorded Happy Anniversary messages for Sabbath.
I mentioned earlier the summer "Best of" show I do. It's not necessarily slamming all the way. I go across the board, playing stuff from all musical paths. The Christmas show is like that, too. We don't slam all the time. Those listening know that "Rock 50" plays 70% of what I consider hardcore metal, not to be confused with the corporate retailers' version of "hardcore," although what I call hardcore often intertwines with that latter definition. I digress.
My point is, we deviate from our normal programming for Christmas. At times, I'm tempted to put the Barking Dogs barking "Jingle Bells" next to Killswitch, but I've not done so yet. Songs featured so far for December are probably Killswitch, and possibly Spineshank's version of George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." We've played that version many times on "Rock 50."
Speaking of George Harrison, I'm checking out some Bangladesh cuts. U2 have what I consider a great Christmas song, "Crumbs from Your Table." I may play "Welcome to the Strange" (Murder Dolls), but we always play that on our " Best of" show. Maybe we won't play the Foo Fighters, that'll be different.
I love doing the Christmas show. We'll make it rock. Again, check it out, guys.
Long live music and the freedom to express exactly, precisely, what's in the heart.
"Place your head upon whatever you've been chosen to call bed." "Ward One: Along The Way
Thanks,
Bill

March 12th Rock 50 Show Details
Traffic's drummer, Jim Capaldi is remembered and highlighted on the next "Rock 50" show, March 12th. Bill will play a special segment of Jim's work with Traffic and two tracks from the 40,000 Headmen Tour of 1998.
Also, while it's short notice (blame the webmaster for being sick for the last week and a half), if you have any questions for Bill for Rock 50 show, email them to rock50@billward.com. Bill will answer some of them on the air!
Bill has a few words to add about Jim; check it out:
JIM CAPALDI
For those who don't know, Jim Capaldi, songwriter, drummer/percussionist and vocalist extraordinaire, died recently on January 28th at a London clinic from stomach cancer.
Jim Capaldi, probably best known for his creative work with Traffic, was for me, an inspiration. As a teenager, I would sit next to the stage at Birmingham's all nighters and study Jim's technique. At that time, Jim played with a Worcestershire-based band called Deep Feeling, which also included Luther Grosvenor, later of Spooky Tooth, and Chris Wood, later of Traffic. Jim was a unique player, and back then at the all nighters he had a heart of many talents.
I got to know Jim, and he gave me a most precious gift. A gift that as a teenage drummer, I probably needed more than anything else. The gift was validation. He validated my playing. At that time, this meant a lot to me. During the heady days of the all nighters, Dave Mason would visit, and in what seemed no time at all, Traffic with Steve Winwood, was born. Traffic's journey is rock history now.
I've admired Jim's work over the years and up until today. Jim Capaldi was a giant in music. I believe he took musical risks that are so important to do. He knew how to play in a band, and that requires in part, listening techniques and selflessness. His rhythms were always cutting-edge, and his songwriting was powerful.
I thank you, Jim, and pay my respects to you. I will never forget what you gave me and how much you've brought to music.
On Saturday, March 12th, we'll play some songs Jim wrote and recorded as a tribute to the man, legendary and very important to rock's history.
Thanks, Jim.

Bill's Rock 50 reruns
For awhile now, Bill Ward has been doing a monthly radio program out of WPMD (a college radio station at Cerritos College in California). This morning comes word that Bill Ward's previous programs will be rerun in a special programming block.
WPMD.org's "alternative stream" presents a Bill Ward Marathon. Every "Rock 50" show that the Black Sabbath drummer has done on WPMD over the last three years will be played, in order and repeated, from February 1st through the 8th.
From February 8th through the 15th, the WPMD.org "alternative stream" will celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the demise of the LA heavy metal legend -- Pure Rock 105.5 KNAC-FM. The celebration will include full shows, special programs, special guests and historical tidbits from the final days leading up to the end on February 15, 1995, when KNAC-FM left the air. On February 15th the final 8 hours will play in the same time slot that closed out the station in 1995 -- from 6am to 2pm. Special guests in those final hours include Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield of Metallica, along with air personalities from the entire history of "Pure Rock" 105.5 KNAC-FM.

I just got word that Bill Ward has agreed to a date for a new edition of his semi-regular radio show on radio station WPMD from Cerritos College in Cerritos, CA. The date he'll be doing it is February 15th. Once I get more info, like the time of the show, I'll report back
UPDATE: I got an update from the producer of the show. He sent me this: Black Sabbath's Bill Ward returns to "Rock 50" on Saturday, February 15th at 11:00am Pacific Time. As always, Bill will be playing his favorite tunes and giving insight into his life over the last 30 years with the band that helped create and shape heavy metal music.
